Yesterday’s Blues but tomorrow we will roar

Firstly, I’d like to thank those friends who offered commiserations and/or asked how I was feeling after Richmond’s early exit from the AFL finals yesterday. It certainly made a pleasant change from those Carlton supporters (not all of them) whose instinctive response to victory is to gloat and rub the opposition supporter’s noses in it. Such behaviour puts them even lower than Collingwood supporters in the pecking order. Even newly elected politicians have the common…

Coleman Impact Players

Two AFL full-forwards this season have made a huge impact for their respective teams, and as at the end of Round 18, are locked together on 65 goals each (3.6 per game) in their race for the Coleman Medal. One is 33 years of age, and enjoying a new lease of life at his new team; the other is just 21, and against all expectations, has had a breakout year as a forward. Barry Hall’s move to the…

Riewoldt’s Perfect Ten

Let’s hope they have plenty of positive things to write about him, as he begins his career as a Richmond Tiger. It’s been great to see the energy that this has brought to the Tiger fans. As usual, the e-mails…

Free Richo

It should go down as ‘AFL coaching move of the year’. Richmond coach Terry Wallace‘s decision to shift Matthew Richardson away from his traditional role at full forward earlier this season was a stroke of brilliance, on so many fronts. During his time at full forward, Richo kicked goals at a rate of nearly 3 per game, and with an accuracy ratio over his career of nearly 60%, statistics which put him at the top…

Leave the game early? NEVER!

I have not yet fully recovered from Richmond’s Sunday devastation at the hands of Geelong. Among the many e-mails and SMSs I received from friends emphasizing what was already known to me, there was the bizarre question “how long did you stay”? My answer to that question was, is, and always will be: I proudly support my team, and I stay until the final siren, no matter what the result, and no matter when the…
